Vasundhara

Project Timeline: 2019-02-28

The journey of Vasundhara began in the year 2012 when Sreemanta Sankar Mission of Guwahati decided to celebrate the spirit of womanhood on the occasion of International Women's Day that year. The endeavour was christened as ‘Vasundhara’ to emphasise the inherent unit of life on planet earth.

What was conceived as an event to celebrate the positive spirit of womanhood quickly took the shape of a small movement to honour and salute women in a country presently beset with prejudice against women. However, it was gratifying to note that notwithstanding the enormity of the challenge facing them, women continue to rise up to the challenge and prove themselves worthy of the society in which they live.

The moment was to salute this resilience and power by honouring a few of Assam’s iconic women who represented various disciplines and channels of thought, duly reflected in their lives and work.

20 iconic personalities were feted on that occasion to send a strong message to the society about the power of women. Their acceptance of the humble honour encourages Sreemanta Sankar Mission of Guwahati to delve deeper into the issue of Northeast India’s women's emancipation. It was observed that their economic resurgence has much to do with their social empowerment.

This is how Vasundhara transformed into a movement deciding to specifically concentrate on the economic transformation of women through their enterprising quality out of nothing. The idea of “Vasundhara- NE Woman Entrepreneur of the Year” award and felicitation programme was this instantly conceived and the next few years saw this movement growing into a platform of national stature from regional in the formative years.
